FDR and the Little White House

We did some exploring today, Monday November 29, 2021.  We went to FDR State Park.  Breath taking is the only work that I can think of about the beauty of the views of Pine Mountain and the 9,000 acreage of land that make up the park.  We were able to pull off at overviews to attempt to capture the beauty of the area.

This is where FDR used to go and picnic and gather his thoughts.

Adventures of the Traveling Mingo!

When my grand daughters  were little, we had a couple of pink flamingos in out back yard.  Papa would occasionally move them!  This would drive Makayla crazy!   She would say "No Papa, the Mingos go back here". Thus the name Mingo!

I painted a ceramic flamingo with my grand daughters a few months back and named it Mingo!  It is now traveling with us on our travels across the country!  Here she is!

Behind the scenes Heroes!

38 years ago the ship, the Marine Electric sank off the coast of Norfolk VA.  With a crew of 34, only 3 survived.  One of the survivors was Gene Kelly , my husband.  He was invited to speak about the sinking and his survival on September 9, 2021 at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy as an Alum of class of 75.

The day of the speech, he finally met the co pilot of the helicopter that pulled him out of the water, Pat Rutludge.  It was an emotional meeting to say the least!

The last photo is Pat Rutludge, Gene Kelly and Robert Frump (author of the book - Until the Sea Shall Them)

We planned our travels to meet Pat in Elizabeth City NC.  He took us on a tour of the US Coast Guard Station where the helicopter was deployed from.  Again, another emotional time for Gene!  Here are a few pictures.

New Chapter

11/3/2021

Today was the first day of the rest of our lives!  Corney? Yes I know.

Well Gene and I got off to a great start!  Great weather, new camper, new truck.

Getting used to the RV GPS is something to get used to.

Right now it is a little awkward because it is supposed to connect to the windshield.

Gene thinks it is in the way.

The new truck has Car Play, which normally would be super, but I have not figured out how to use

the RVGPS app with car play and have it turn by turn.

Ok, so much for that.  Well we did manage to get stuck right in the middle of New York traffic.

Add 1.5 hours to an already 6.5 hour trip.  Then a gas break, lunch break and supper break.

Got here in the dark.  Not a fun experience and one we hope to avoid in the future.

All in all, all is good so far.

This is one of the structures that is being renovated in NY.

We stayed at the Philadelphia south/Clarksboro NJ KOA.

We arrived in the dark which was not an ideal situation.  T

here will be no details of the parking experience!  :)

11/4/2021

Today we decided to just drive a short distance and take it easy.

We are in a wonderful KOA Washington DC / Capitol Koa Holiday (Capitol Koa Campground).

Quiet and calming.   We are near a pond with a fountain in the middle.  Very nice.

Off to North Carolina tomorrow.  We will stay there for at least a week visiting with friends

and seeing some sights.

11/5/2021

We are in Shiloh, North Carolina at a campground called North River Campground.  It is miles from

nowhere!  Lots of plowed fields for the winter around.  We even saw some cotton fields!

Never saw that before.

Very nice site, right on the “5 acre Pond”.   A little chilly and windy.

One view is the pond and the other is the woods.

The host did remind us of where the dumpster was because they get “wilderness animals' ' here.

Hmmm  I think she meant deer and bears!  Black bears!
